Hoya anulata

F. R. R. Schlechter

Published in Nachträge zur Flora der Deutschen Schutzgebiete in der Südsee 326 (1905) by F. R. R. Schlechter. Hoya anulata originates from New Guinea. It was collected by Schlechter in the trees near the Nuru River, at 400 meters altitude, in 1902. Holotype: R. Schlechter n. 14185.

Hoya anulata is a quite common hoya among the collectors in Sweden. It is quite easy to grow, but in my experience not as easy to get in bloom. It took me six years! It was well worth the wait though because the flowers are really lovely.

Hoya anulata is a haning hoya. It does not seem to have much climbing abilities, so it you want to grow it supported by a trellis you will need to help it around. If grown hanging it will take a lot of space because it is a fast grower. The leaves are rather thick and it tolerates drought. If grown in a sunny position the leaves turn red. Hoya anulata flowers mainly during spring and summer. The flowers spread a weak scent, which reminds me of liquorice, in the evenings.
