Hoya calycina subsp. calycina

Schlechter

Published in Botanische Jahrbucher fur Systematik 1 125 (1913) by Schlechter. Hoya calycina originates from Papua New Guinea.

The first Hoya calycina subsp. calycina I owned was a cutting I bought from a hoya collector. After two years I gave up on it as it just wouldn't grow. In 2007 I bought a big plant, with a lot of buds, at the florist´s. It was in bloom for four weeks!

Plant
Leaves: pubescent, hard, medium  green, 15 cm long, 9 cm wide
Growth habit: climbing
Flowers
No. in a cluster: 10-15
Size: 3 cm
Colour: white corolla with a red centre and white corona
Form: campanulate
Scent: strong
Nectar: yes
Lastingness: less than 2 weeks

The whole plant is pubescent and the leaves are quite hard. The large, campanulate flowers spread a heavy, sweet scent during the evenings. If there are more than one umbel in bloom at the same time the scent can be  quite overwhelming.

This hoya needs to dry some between waterings. I have my plant in a sunny southern window where it seems to thrive.
