Hoya carnosa var. carnosa

(Linneaus f.) R. Brown

Published in Prodromus Florae Novae-Hollandiae et Insulae Van-Diemen 132 (1811) by R. Brown. Hoya carnosa var. carnosa originates from China.

Hoya carnosa var. carnosa was the first hoya I owned. I took a cutting from a plant at a nursing home where I used to work on my summer holidays some 20 years ago. I've cut the plant down several times and given many cuttings to friends and relatives throughout the years. Today I try to keep this plant small but it's not easy; it grows fast!

Plant
Leaves: dark green, slightly speckled, 8-11 cm long, 5-6 cm wide
Growth habit: climbing
Flowers
No. in a cluster: 20-30
Size: 2 cm
Colour: light pink corolla, white corona with red centre
Form: flat
Scent: strong
Nectar: yes
Lastingness: about two weeks

It flowers almost any time of the year and can be grown in any point of the compass. If grown in a northern window the foliage is most beatiful; dark green and shiny. Unfortunatley it doesn't flower as much as if grown in any other window. It tolerates drought and can be grown in temperatures down to 10° C.

The scent of the flowers is very strong and it fills the room in the evening. The flowers are light pink and covered with short hair. They produce a lot of nectar which makes a mess to clean up when the flowers drop. The flowers last at least one week, often two.
