Hoya cystiantha

(C. L. Blume) F. R. R. Schlechter

Published in Botanische Jahrbücher für Systematik Pflanzengeschichte und Pflanzengeographie 50 suppl. p. 127 (1913) by F. R. R. Schlechter. Hoya cystiantha originates from Sumatra.

I bought a cutting of Hoya cystiantha from Ted Green in 2006. I got it in bloom early and the campanualte flowers spread a nice scent of citrus in the evenings. Overall it looks like Hoya wallichii, but it's smaller in all measures. It can be tricky to grow supported on a trellis as it doesn't twine and the stems break easily when

trying to bend them. As this hoya has thin leaves I don't let it dry completely between waterings. I actually have this one in a selfwatering pot.

This species was originally published by C. L. Blume as Cystidianthus laurifolius in Museum Botanicum 57 (1851). In 1913 Schlechter moved it to the Hoya genus. I have earlier stated that the name Hoya cystiantha isn't valid as the name was only mentioned in an indirect reference. According to the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature, Article 33.2, before 1953 it was correct to change a name with an indirect reference, thus making the name Hoya cystiantha correct.

Some claim this species is synonymous with Hoya campanulata.
