Published in Webbia 64(2) 163-167 (2009) by M. Rodda and T. Nyhuus. Hoya danumensis originates from Borneo. It is named for its habitat; Danum valley, Sabah, Borneo. In 2005 I got my first cutting of this species. Then it was named Hoya wallichii. Recent studies of the herbarium sheet of Hoya wallichii have shown that it does not match the plant we have in cultivation today. For example the shape of the corona differs. Therefore this species has |

been published as Hoya danumensis. Hoya danumensis has thin leaves and requires a lot of water to thrive. When the plant starts producing buds you should not let it dry. Since I do not have my plant in a selfwatering pot I water it every day until the buds open. It is well worth the trouble because the flowers are really magnificent; they measure 40 mm. Hoya danumensis grows most like a shrub, but sometimes a branch reaches out to try to grab something to climb on. If grown supported by a trellis it will need som help around. |
