Hoya fungii

E. D. Merrill

Published in Lingnan Science Journal 13 68 (1934) by E. D. Merrill. Hoya fungii originates from China.

Hoya fungii is an easy hoya to grow. It tolerates drought and it flowers in a shaded position. It grows quite fast and since it is a climber I recommend a stable support from the beginning. The leaves are large and almost round. They are medium green and the veins are dark green. The back side of the leaves is pubescent.

Plant
Leaves: medium green, dark veins 17 cm long, 10 cm wide
Growth habit: climbing
Flowers
No. in a cluster: ~20
Size: 2 cm
Colour: beige/pink corolla, white corona with red centre
Form: flat
Scent: yes
Nectar: yes
Lastingness: ~10 days

The flowers remind of the ones of Hoya carnosa. The scent is weaker though, more pleasant in my opinion. Since Hoya fungii is a cold growing species I recommend to grow this one in a cool (15-20°C) position if possible.

To the right most below is a picture of the pollinarium which measures 0.9 mm.
