Hoya krohniana

R. D. Kloppenburg & Siar

Published in Fraterna 22(4) 9-12 (2009) by R. D. Kloppenburg & Siar. Hoya krohniana probably originates from the Philippines. It is named in honour of Phillip Krohn.

Hoya krohniana is a small hoya. It has no climbing abilities so it's best grown in a hanging basket. The most attractive thing about this plant is the small heartshaped leaves. They remind very much of Hoya lacunosa except for the shape. They are no longer than 4 cm, most of them are much smaller. Also, the flowers remind very much of Hoya lacunosa.

I got my first cutting of this hoya from a friend in 2006. It grew quite fast and now it's a rather large plant. I grow my plant in a shaded place in my garden room where night temperatures are cooler. I haven't felt any scent from the flowers, but it might just be that I've missed it.

Hoya krohniana
is easy to grow. It tolerates drought, it grows fast and flowers readily. So this is a species I recommend for the beginner.

To the left; the pollinarium which measures 0.5 mm.
