Hoya macgillivrayi (IML0017)

F. M. Bailey

Published in The Queensland Agricultural Journal 1 n.s. 190-192 (1914) by F. M. Bailey. Hoya macgillivrayi was named for its collector Dr. W. Macgillivray. Hoya macgillivrayi originates from Australia. This clone, IML0017 was collected near Massey river in Queensland, Australia.

Hoya macgillivrayi is one of the most spectacular hoyas. I grow my plant in a window facing south and I give it plenty of water and fertilize it regularly. It took four years

Plant
Leaves: dark green, thick and hard, 15-18 cm long, 9 cm wide
Growth habit: climbing
Flowers
No. in a cluster: ~10
Size: 8 cm
Colour:dark red corolla, pink corona
Form: campanulate, some times almost flat
Scent: reminds of gardenia
Nectar: not visible
Lastingness: ~10 days

before I got my plant in bloom for the first time. I guess it needed more water than I gave it. When the buds finally started developing I watered it every day. The flowers spread a nice scent in the evenings. It reminds of gardenia.

Hoya macgillivrayi is a climber and it is a large Hoya which grows quite fast so I recommend to grow it on a steady support from the beginning.

To the left the pollinarium which measures 1.7 mm.
