Hoya carnosa var. carnosa x Hoya serpens (BE23)

cultivar

This hoya is a hybrid between Hoya carnosa var. carnosa and Hoya serpens. When Emilio Begine in Belgium had these both plants in bloom on his patio insects did the pollination for him. This hybrid is widely known as Hoya 'Mathilde', but it hasn't been formally published (or registered), so Hoya 'Mathilde' isn't a valid name. It has been described in Fraterna no. 1, Vol. 16 (2003) by Emilio Begine.

This hoya is absolutely one of my favourites. It is

Plant
Leaves: dark green,  speckled, slightly pubescent, round 3-2.5 cm
Growth habit: climbing
Flowers
No. in a cluster: 15-25
Size: 1.5 cm
Colour: white/light green corolla, white corona with red centre
Form: flat
Scent: yes
Nectar: yes
Lastingness: ~ 2 weeks

quite easy to grow and it flowers readily. I grow mine in a hanging basket, but it would also do well on a trellis as it is a good climber like Hoya carnosa var. carnosa. Its requirements are pretty much the same as Hoya serpens. Keep the soil evenly moist and grow it in a shaded place. It's a cold growing species so it tolerates temperatures about 10°C for longer periods. I grow mine in the garden room where it thrives.

The picture at the right shows Hoya serpens at the top and Hoya carnosa var. carnosa x Hoya serpens (BE23) below it. The scent of this hybrid resembles the scent of Hoya carnosa  var. carnosa

To the right most is a picture of the pollinarium which measures 0.85 mm.
