Hoya merrillii

Schlechter

Published in Fragmenta Florae Philippinae: Contributions to the Flora of the Philippine Islands, 1(2) 131 (1904) by Schlechter. It was collected on Mindoro Islands in 1903. Hoya merrillii was named for its collector, E. D. Merrill.

It is stated in the publication that the peduncles only are 2 cm long. On my plant I have seen peduncles as long as 9 cm and also shorter like described. Maybe it varies a lot on this species? Also the leaves on my plant are much larger than described in the publication. Maybe it could be

Plant
Leaves: light green, thick and hard, 17 cm long, 9 cm wide
Growth habit: climbing
Flowers
No. in a cluster: ~20-30
Size:
Colour: greyish yellow corolla, white corona
Form: flat
Scent: weak
Nectar: not visible
Lastingness: 3-4 days

explained by the fact that Schlechter only had access to the collection material made by Merrrill and had not cultivated this species. In cultivation it is possible that the leaves grow much larger because the plant does not get any competition from other plants. I guess it is safe to say that Schlechter did not cultivate this species (before he published it) as the collection was made in 1903 and the publication was made in 1904.

Hoya merrillii
is an easy hoya to grow. The foliage is glabrous and the veins are clearly visible. If exposed to the sun the leaves turn red. It tolerates drought and can be placed in direct sun. Hoya merrillii gets in time a rather big plant, so I recommend a steady support from the beginning.

To the left is a picture of the pollinarium which measures 0.55 mm.
