Hoya 'Minibelle' (splotched leaves)

cultivar

Hoya 'Minibelle' is most likely a cross between Hoya carnosa and Hoya shepherdii. The foliage reminds more of Hoya shepherdii than of Hoya carnosa. The hybridizer, Ed Hummel, named this cultivar for his  wife, Minibelle Hummel.

This form of Hoya 'Minibelle' is special because of the leaves which are completely covered with silver. I do not know much about its origin. It could be a sport or a seedling.

I got my plant as a small cutting in May 2006. It has been a slow grower and it is still a rather small plant. Now in February 2009 it got in bloom for the first time. The flowers are the same as on the more common Hoya 'Minibelle'. The scent is not very strong.

I grow this one in a hanging basket, but since it is a climber it would do well supported on a trellis. Both Hoya carnosa and Hoya shepherdii prefers cooler growing conditions so I grow my Hoya 'Minibelle' (splotched leaves) in my garden room where especially the night temperature is lower.

Below, to the right, is a picture of the pollinarium which measures 0.75 mm.
