Hoya multiflora (white edges)

C. L. Blume

Published in Catalogus van eenige der Merkwaardigste Zoo in- als Uit-heemse Gewassen, te Vinden in's Lands Plantentuin te Buitenzorg 49 (1823) by C. L. Blume. Hoya multiflora originates from Malaysia and the Philippines.

I guess this variegated Hoya multiflora is a cultivar form, but I don't know where it originates from. If you know anything about it, please send me an e-mail!

The variegated Hoya multiflora is as easy to grow as the plain green

Hoya multiflora, but the leaves of this one are in my opinion much more attractive. As most variegated hoyas it grows a bit slower. Some say it is trickier to root, but I have had no problems with it. Usually I root cuttings of it in water.

It flowers as often as the plain green Hoya multiflora but there are usually less flowers in the cluster. The buds and the flowers are often striped, most easily seen on the buds (see picture below). The buds often start open at a very early stage, long before they are mature. I have no idea why it does that. This is a phenomenon I haven't noticed on any of my other hoyas. The flowers produce a lot of nectar.

I'm not sure the name on this species is the correct one. As far as I know research on Hoya multiflora and Hoya javanica is ongoing and I'm looking forward to any news about the correct identification of this species.
