Hoya padangensis

F. R. R. Schlechter

Published in Beihefte zum Botanischen Centralblatt 34 (2) Abt. B 15 (1916) by F. R. R. Schlechter. Hoya padangensis originates from Sumatra. Hoya padangensis is named after the place where it was found; Padang Pandjang on Sumatra, Indonesia.

Hoya padangensis is sometimes sold as Hoya uncinata. As Hoya uncinata was published first (J. E. Teijsmann & S. Binnendijk, Tijdschrift voor Nederlandsch-Indië Vol. 25, p. 408, 1863) it should be the correct name, but I've learned

Plant
Leaves: glabrous, shimmering, 13 cm long, 3.5 cm wide
Growth habit:
Flowers
No. in a cluster: ~15
Size: 1.3 cm
Colour: pink/beige corolla, yellow/white corona
Form: almost flat
Scent: yes
Nectar: some
Lastingness: less than a week

that a reference to a herbarium sheet is missing making that publication invalid.

The foliage is quite nice with its mother-of-pearl shimmering leaves. The black spots on the leaves are typical for this species. It's quite easy to grow, but probably needs some time before it flowers. I've had my plant since January 2006, but I still haven't managed to get it in bloom. The pictures of the flowers above I took at a friends plant.
