Hoya pauciflora

R. Wight

Published in Icones Plantarum Indiae Orientalis t. 1269 (1848) by R. Wight. Hoya pauciflora originates from India. The name pauciflora means few flowers.

Hoya pauciflora is a lovely hoya. The large flowers are crystal white and their scent is fresh. This species was originally found in Cochin, Karala Province, India at 1000-1500 metres, so I grow my plant in the garden room as this one likes cooler temperatures. It's placed in a window facing south where it gets a lot of direct sunlight. But it doesn't seem to have any problems with that. It tolerates drought as well, so I guess it's safe to say that this species is quite easy to grow.

It took three years before I got my Hoya pauciflora in bloom for the first time, but it was worth the wait!

To the left are two pictures of the buds. Hoya pauciflora usually has one or two flowers in each umbel. The peduncle is so short it looks like the pedicel grows directly from the stem.

To the right is a comparison of Hoya retusa (at the top) and Hoya pauciflora (below).
