Hoya pimenteliana

R. D. Kloppenburg

Published in Fraterna 12 3 7 (1999) by R. D. Kloppenburg. Hoya pimenteliana originates from the Philippines. It was collected by Blas Hernaez at Casaguran, Quezon Province, Luzon, Philippines. Hoya pimenteliana is named in honour of Reynold Pimentel.

Some say this species is in fact Hoya cagayanensis. I have discussed this with Torill Nyhuus and she has come to the conclusion that this one isn't Hoya cagayanensis. Several parts of the flower don't match the ones of the drawings

that Schlechter made of Hoya cagayanensis, i.e. calyx, corona, pollinarium. I have seen the drawings and agree with Torill, so I'll keep this one named Hoya pimenteliana.

Hoya pimenteliana
is in my experience quite easy to grow. As long as it gets water on a regular basis it's a fast grower. It is a climber and twines very well, so I recommend to grow it supported by a trellis. I grow my plant in a shaded window facing south. I got my first cutting of this species in May 2006 and in March 2008 I got it in bloom for the first time. The flowers' scent is somewhat spicy but you have to put your nose really close to sense it. The foliage is very decorative; medium green and nacreous. The leaves are up to 13 cm long and 3 cm wide.

To the left; a picture of the pollinarium.
