Hoya puber |

Published in Bijdragen tot de Flora van Nederlandsch Indië 16 1065 (1826) by C. L. Blume. In the publication it's named Hoya pubera, but that name is not correct according to latin grammar and shall therefore be corrected. Hoya puber originates from Java (collected in Nusae Kambange). When I got my Hoya puber it was named Hoya picta. Hoya picta was also published by C. L. Blume (as Acanthostemma pictum in Museum Botanicum, Vol. 4, p. 58 (1849), moved to Hoya by Miquel in 1856), so it is not likely that these two hoyas are |

synonumous. From the publications of them it's not easy to determine which is the correct name for the plants we have in cultivation today (if we have them!). Blume mentions in the publication of Hoya picta that the leaves have purple spots on both sides though. I have not observed any such spots on my plant so I've therefore excluded Hoya picta as a possible name for it and decided to name my plant Hoya puber. Hoya puber is a small leaved, hanging hoya. The leaves vary a lot in shape (see pictures above and below). Some leaves are almost round, 1.5*1.5 cm, and some are narrow and long, up to 4.5 cm. They are quite thick and light or medium green depending on how much light the plant gets and they have some silver flecks. The leaves have no visible veins. The length between the nodes can be quite short so it looks like they grow in clusters. I recommend at least 4-5 cuttings in the pot to make a nice looking plant. If Hoya puber is put in draught the leaves turn yellow and fall off. It doesn´t like to dry completely between waterings either. Some say it likes a lot of light, but keep it from direct sun. I actually have my plant in a window facing north and I've had it in bloom many times. The flowers are yellow and minute. The scent is weak so you have to put you nose really close to feel the nice scent that reminds me of almond. Even though the flowers are minute I think it is a hoya well worth growing. |
