Published in Fraterna 14(2):8 2001 by Robert Dale Kloppenburg. It was originally published as Astrostemma spartioides by George Bentham in Hooker's Icones Plantarum 14:7 t. 1311 1880. Hoya spartioides originates from Borneo, Indonesia. It was collected by James Motley in Banjarmasin, Kalimantan on Southern Borneo and by Fredrick William Thomas Burbidge on northern Borneo. Hoya spartioides is very different among hoyas because of its absence of leaves. It grows in holes on trees as an |

epiphyte. This species is very rare in nature, if it still exists, since its habitat has been severely exploited. My plant is still small even though I have had it for a while. I have had problems with mealy bugs on the roots so I have re-rooted my plant several times. Hopefully they are gone now. Obviously my plant has not bloomed yet so the picture above is from a friends plant. |
