Hoya walliniana

R. D. Kloppenburg & T. Nyhuus

Published in Fraterna 16(4) (2003) by R. D. Kloppenburg and T. Nyhuus. Hoya walliniana originates from Malaysia. It is named in honour of the Swede Pierre Wallin. Hoya walliniana was collected at Sipitang, Sarawak, Sabah, Malaysia in 1997 by a group including both the authors. It reminds of Hoya sipitangensis.

I got a cutting of Hoya walliniana in September 2007. I thought I had this species earlier (Hoya sp. Kuching, IML0232) but when it got in bloom I saw it had to be something else.

Plant
Leaves: dark green, silver flecks, 7 cm long, 2 cm wide
Growth habit: hanging/climbing
Flowers
No. in a cluster: ~ 30
Size: 8 mm (measured flat)
Colour: white corolla, red corona
Form: revolute
Scent: weak
Nectar: not visible
Lastingness: less than a week

My plant originates from T. Nyhuus' plant and since she was one of the collectors in Malaysia in 1997 it should be the correct one.

Hoya walliniana
is a climber but I grow my plant hanging. Every once in a while I have to sort it out from the other plants in the window as it gets entangled everywhere. It hangs in a window facing north and thrives and flowers there. It doesn't require a lot and tolerates drought so it's a good choice for the unexperienced Hoya grower.
